Modern Rustic End Table

This project was made on a whim! I went into my shop one day with no projects planned or scheduled, and started to clean up my scrap 2x4s I had laying around. Next thing I know, I am cutting 45-degree mitered angles on the ends of the 2x4s.

I would cut one and then cut the next, ensuring the second piece was cut long enough to match up with the 45-degree cut length of the first piece. I repeated this process a few times to get a longer length of 2×4. I reversed the process by cutting the 45-degree ends shorter and shorter to form up the end of the “square” table. I drilled some pocket holes on one side of all of the 2x4s and joined them together with 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws. I used my palm router to apply a small round over on both sides of the assembly and gave it a light sanding. I then used my favorite Dark Walnut wood stain on the table top and edges.

At this point I really didn’t know what I had made. It was cool but I did not know it would become a table top. I didn’t really have a vision for how to make legs. I then thought about using hairpin legs. So, that was it. I bought some hairpin legs and installed them on the bottom of the table.

Once the table was complete, my wife loved it so much that she wanted it in our living room, which is where it is to this day!
