Overlay cabinets feature a hardwood face frame with a door that overlaps the frame. Overlay cabinets typically feature a 5-piece door, but can also be constructed with a solid panel door.

Inset Cabinets
Inset cabinets are much like overlay cabinets, yet the door is inset within the face frame. The face frame is hardwood and door can be either a solid panel door or a 5-piece door.
Frameless Cabinets
Frameless cabinets do not have a face frame, and the doors are generally a solid panel door. A 5-piece door (while not typical) can certainly be used.
